Beacon - The Howland Public Library Re-Open House took place on June 12, 2010. The event welcomed the community back into the library after six weeks of renovations. Assemblyman Frank Skartados and Susan McGuire, representing Senator Steve Saland, were thanked for their support of New York State Library Construction grants. HPL’s $51,000 matching grant made the project possible. Beacon Mayor Steve Gold spoke about the importance of the library in the community. Library Board President Marcia Frahman performed the ribbon-cutting for an appreciative audience. Dale Leifeste emceed the event. Julann Cobb and Ai-Ping Ma provided refreshments. Grasshopper, our Main and S. Cedar neighbor, provided delicious ices during the festivities, which included the dedication of the Beacon High School mural on the S. Cedar wall of the library.
The project wouldn’t have been as successful without the help of volunteers John Darcy, John Johnson, David Keaton, Linda Pedersen & Jeff Sovik. The project wouldn’t have happened at all without the work of the Howland Public Library Reconfiguration Committee: Julann Cobb (Community), Maureen Darcy, Ginny Figlia, Marcia Frahman (Library Board), Alison Herrero, Rhonda Johnson, Fanny Keaton (Library Director), Bruce Pedersen, and Karen Sovik aided by all library staff. The Reconfiguration Project was truly a team effort.
