Newburgh - After a hiatus of several years, the City of Newburgh Human Rights Commission has been reactivated. Chairperson Dr. Benilda Armstead-Jones announced, "The City of Newburgh Human Rights Commission is open for business. We have been appointed by the City Council to foster mutual understanding and respect between and among all the residents of the City, and to receive complaints and investigate incidents of tension and conflict based upon differences of race, religion, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, or another basis of discrimination. Our purpose is to peacefully resolve such conflicts and alleviate such tensions and facilitate improved tolerance and understanding in the community."
"We invite anyone who wishes to lodge a complaint involving an incident of discrimination, or anyone who wishes to know more about the work of the Commission or contribute to our work to contact us in writing. The new Commission members were appointed on April 27, 2009 by the City Council’s unanimous adoption of Resolution No. 57-2009 by the City Council. They are Dr. Benilda Armstead-Jones, Chairperson, La Asia Baldwin, Joyce Hill and Ed McCarthy.
