Newburgh - An Immigrants’ Rights Discussion, the first of its kind in Newburgh, will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Delano Hitch Activity Center, 401 Washington St., Newburgh. The event is sponsored by Latinos Unidos of the Hudson Valley, the Westchester Hispanic Coalition, the City of Newburgh, and Hudson Health Plan.
"About 98 percent of the immigrant population in Newburgh is Hispanic," said Peter Gonzalez, vice president of Latinos Unidos. "We feel the immigrant population is getting false information about immigration laws and how to obtain green cards. We are lucky to have a group of immigration experts who are willing to come to Newburgh, to talk to the immigrants about their rights. Even if these immigrants are not documented, they still have rights."
Topics to be discussed include how to become a U.S. citizen, including through a relative who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; immigrants’ rights in case of raids and detention; how to apply for permanent residency or citizenship; and how to renew permanent residency cards and work permits. There will also be a chance for private consultations with the attorney and legal assistants.
"We are honored to be partnering with Latinos Unidos and supporting the community work they do," said Mark Santiago, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Hudson Health Plan. "This important discussion will give immigrants living in Newburgh the accurate information they need to help protect their status in the United States."
