Sponsored by St. Luke’s Hospital, there are additional opportunities for businesses and individuals in the community to give back. Sponsorships are available at a variety of different levels. Please contact Maria Madero at 845-562-6940 or mmadero@safe-harbors.org to request more information.
“We would like to see students, families and the community come out to support this event”, said Tricia Haggerty Wenz, “it is wonderful to see the transformation taking place on lower Broadway, and having the only run in the City of Newburgh reminds us all of what is possible in the future of our City.”
Safe Harbors is a non-profit organization whose mission is transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts.” SHOH’s first project began in December 2002 with the purchase of the old Hotel Newburgh, transforming the run-down welfare hotel into safe, affordable and supportive housing. Renamed The Cornerstone Residence, the building consists of 128 supportive housing apartments. The Cornerstone houses a mixed tenancy of single adults include the formerly homeless, veterans, those with mental illness, artists and other adults needing affordable housing. This is a unique housing opportunity where, in collaboration with Independent Living, support services and jobs training is on-site. There is an art studio and art gallery on-site as well. Plans include the renovation of multi-commercial spaces and the restoration of the historic Ritz Theater, which will bring economic development to downtown Newburgh.
In October of 2007, the Supportive Housing Network of New York presented Safe Harbors of the Hudson the “Residence of the Year” award for the Cornerstone Residence. Safe Harbors was one of two projects in New York State that received this prestigious designation for innovative supportive housing.
SHOH’s vision was to create a building that is beautiful with many amenities available to its tenants. Some of these amenities include a computer lab, library, TV Lounge and a fitness room. Our programs include an on-site GED program, computer and internet classes, and the Wellness Center which offers programs open to the community.
