Firefighters Graduate at Ceremony on Mount Campus

NEWBURGH – Nine cadets from the Newburgh Fire Department Career Recruit Academy’s Class of 14-01 became full-fledged firefighters on Friday, July 11, 2014 during a graduation ceremony held at Mount Saint Mary College.

Those presiding over the ceremony were Michael Vatter, Newburgh Fire Chief; Judy Kennedy, Newburgh mayor; James Raimo, vice president for facilities and operations at Mount Saint Mary College; and many other government and fire officials.

The newly-minted firefighters endured 14 weeks of intense training, including live burn practice drills, hazardous materials response, and more.

One graduate, John McNamee, is from the Middletown Fire Department.

The other eight graduates are from the Newburgh Fire Department: Kevin Byrnes, Max Carrero, Dante Defiore, Christopher Donovan, Raymond Griffin, Stephen Hawkins, Johnathan Irwin, and Timothy Ryan.

The day held twice the joy for Donovan, who was married that afternoon.
