NEWBURGH - The Newburgh Rowing Club will support Newburgh Illuminated all weekend long, during the June 21-22 celebration, said Coach Ed Kennedy, Director of Programs for the Newburgh Rowing Club.
On Saturday, June 21st, Coach Kennedy and his rowers will once again be ferrying guests around the Polly at Downing Park for Newburgh Illuminated. The Newburgh Rowing Club will have a Newburgh Illuminated Lightbulb, sponsored by LoBiondo Law Offices, at the top of the Newburgh Rowing Club entrance.
On Sunday June 22nd, there will be an afternoon Rowing Regatta at the Newburgh Rowing Club boathouse called the "Coach Ellis F. Ward commemorative Newburgh Regatta". Coach Ellis F. Ward was one of the famous Ward Brothers, who rowed out of the City of Newburgh during the 1860’s and 1870’s. Coach Ward went on to become the first coach of the champion University of Pennsylvania crew team. He was given a commemorative silver megaphone by the University of Pennsylvania for his championship teams and - in May of 2013 - that priceless historic silver megaphone was given to the Newburgh Rowing Club at a special dedication ceremony attended by his descendants, seven of whom traveled out from Pennsylvania for the event witnessed by hundreds of spectators.
Hence, the "Coach Ellis F. Ward Commemorative Regatta" harkens back to the glory days of rowing in the city of Newburgh when Rowing Regatta’s were attended by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country. Commemorative Regatta T-shirts will be sold.
Following the Regatta, there will be cheese and crackers and sparkling juice for all spectators, hosted by Team Mom Mrs. Lo and the Student Ambassadors of America Rows Newburgh.
Finally, the Newburgh Rowing Club will top it all off with a "water parade" of gig boats and kayaks illuminated with twinkling battery operated lights, against the evening sky, on the Hudson River, on Sunday June 22nd at dusk, thereby closing the Newburgh Illuminated ceremonies.
