Maloney Honors Dr. Martin Luther King

NEWBURGH -  While celebrating the life and teachings of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King at Baptist Temple Church in Newburgh on Monday, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) announced support for the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act, which reestablishes critical voter protections struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2013.

“On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor a man who dedicated his life to demanding freedom, fighting injustice and delivering the promise of a brighter future for all Americans. His strength and courage in the face of unspeakable hardship made it possible for many more folks to achieve the American Dream,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “Despite our progress, our job is not done until every American has equal rights and equal access to the ballot – something Americans lost with the deeply disappointing Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act. We can right this wrong by passing the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act to ensure each and every American has the fundamental right to vote.

The Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 will restore protections for individuals in states with five or more voting rights violations over the past fifteen years. Additionally, it requires all states to provide notices of changes to state and local election procedures to the local media and online within 180 days of a federal election.
