NEWBURGH - The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday will be celebrated by the Black History Committee of the Hudson Valley  - Monday, January 20, 2014, 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The event will be held at New Hope Baptist Church, 20 Rev. Brigg’s Way (Mills Street), Newburgh, New York.

In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court – Brown vs. Board of Education cases, the theme “Remembering the Promise of Brown vs. Board of Education By Pursuing Excellence in Education” will be explored. The community wide initiative Newburgh Brown 60 will be also presented.

The annual program serves to commemorate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by uplifting his commitment to education. Mrs. Sadie Tallie, BHC President, says, “The Monday day service is a family program that both empowers and enriches the community.” Workshops will be facilitated for preschool through 12th grades. The Rev. Dr. King Memorial Award presentation, singspiration, door-prizes and a “lite” lunch remain staples of the 45 year memorial program. Special, this year, is guest speaker, Dr. Beryl Bailey, Director for Educational Literacy of the Bloomfield, CT Public Schools.

The celebration is open to the public. A freewill offering is received. All are welcome.
