Friends of Taconic State Park Hosts First Day Hike

About 45 adults, children and canine companions joined Friends of Taconic State Park for a First Day Hike to the Bash Bish Falls in 2013. The group will reprise the First Day Hike on, January 1st at 1pm.
COPAKE FALLS - Friends of Taconic State Park will host a First Day Hike to Bash Bish Falls on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 beginning at 1pm.  The event is part of a nationwide initiative launched by the organization America’s State Parks to encourage Americans to begin the New Year by rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors.

Milbrey Zelley, president of Friends of Taconic State Park, said of the event “we are delighted to offer this event for the third year to Taconic State Park lovers and to be part of such an important nationwide initiative.“  The January 1st hike to the Bash Bish Falls will follow the newly created “Bash Bish Connector” trail opened by the Friend group last spring.  It is a family friendly hike of about four miles, almost all of which runs alongside the Bash Bish Stream.

As always, people of all ages are welcome as are well mannered dogs.   Young people are especially encouraged to attend.  A Friends of Taconic State Park t-shirt will be awarded to the youngest participant to complete the hike.  Hikers meet at 1pm at the Park office building on Route 344 in Copake Falls.

Friends of Taconic State Park was established in 2008 to support cultural, recreational and educational activities within the park.   The group offers hiking and snowshoeing events throughout the year, as well as educational programs on the history of the Copake Iron Works, an historic site located within the park.  The group recently completed the stabilization and preservation of the historic Copake Iron Works furnace which is considered to be a unique and important example of 19th century industrial history.  That project was funded by an interest free loan which the group is now fundraising to repay.
