Loarte named ‘Student of the Year’

Loarte is seen here with New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera.
NEWBURGH - Mount Saint Mary College student Xiomara Loarte, a native of Newburgh, N.Y. and an interdisciplinary major on the pre-law track, recently received the Student of the Year Award from the New York State Cooperative and Experiential Education Association (NYSCEEA).

This award is given to a student who shows outstanding achievement in – and contribution to – experiential education.

Loarte and her family attended to the 39th Annual NYSCEEA Conference in Cooperstown, N.Y. to accept the honor.

Last semester, Loarte headed to Albany to intern at the New York State Senate. Working in the office of Gustavo Rivera, who represents the Bronx’s 33rd Senate District, she researched bills and reported her findings to Rivera, as well as attending press conferences and public hearings on behalf of the senator.

“I have to say that my experience has been amazing,” she said. “The senator is really proud of what we’ve accomplished. I feel blessed.”

Loarte is interning this semester at the office of Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney in Newburgh, N.Y.

“Now I’m more informed, which helps come election time,” she explained.

She added that networking opportunities have also made her internship experiences very valuable.

Loarte received her internships though the Mount’s Career Center. The center offers a smorgasbord of opportunities for Mount students every semester. Many have received full-time jobs as a result of internships.
