Stamps celebrates her 100th birthday

POUGHKEEPSIE - On Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Pines at Poughkeepsie Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, Mrs. Gladys Stamps celebrated her 100th birthday with ice cream and cake.

Stamps was surrounded by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Scott Garrett of Poughkeepsie, NY, her daughter- in-law, Geraldine Garrett, of Chelsea, NY, as well as her grandchildren and friends during this happy occasion.

In the absence of Randy Casale, Mayor, she was presented with a Proclamation, and a Certificate from Deacon Robert L. Barksdale, Servant Leader of the Deacon Ministry as the oldest living member of Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1923.

Gladys May Scott was born on June 19, 1913 to John Scott and Mary Ida Brown.

Her father died in 1939, while getting ready for church where he served as an Usher, her mother died at an early age when she was 10 years.

Gladys Scott joined the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, 22 North Cedar Street, in 1923 and was baptized at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie, NY; because at the time Star did not have a pool.

In 1928 Gladys Scott married Brown Garrett, Sr. with K.B. Galloway in attendance at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, 22 North Cedar Street, Beacon, NY. She and her husband operated the first Black owned Taxi Business, Garrett’s Taxi, located at 74 Ferry Street, Beacon, NY from 1940 to 1965.

Her church activities include: Deaconess Ministry and member of the Missionary Ministry.

She has been a member of the Deaconess Ministry since 1965, and is now an honorary member.

Her past activities include: Usher, Trustee Board, Secretary/treasure for the church, Willing Worker Club, Building Fund Committee, Sunday School Teacher and keeping track of membership tithes and offerings.

Her community activities includes: Past Worthy Matron, Life member of the Eastern Star for 61 years of service, past member of the Addie W. Hutton Club, and member of the E.S.F.W.C., Inc.

She is the mother of four (Wendel and Scott Garrett) two deceased, with 11 grand-children. 29 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren.
