Celebrate Washington’s Headquarters’ 163rd year

This year, on the 4th of July, Washington’s Headquarters will be celebrating its 163rd anniversary by allowing patrons into the Headquarters and Museum free of charge.

NEWBURGH - Though July 4th is the birthday of our nation, it is also the birthday of General Washington’s Newburgh headquarters as the first publicly owned and operated historic site in the nation since July 4, 1850. In honor of this occasion, admission to the Headquarters and Museum will be free for the one day, compliments of Deputy Mayor Regina Angelo.

Celebrate our site’s birthday with a tour of the Hasbrouck House that served as headquarters for General and Mrs. Washington from April, 1782 until August, 1783. Our doors open at 10:00 AM and the first tour is 10:30, the last at 4:30. Tours are offered every half hour.

So, if you’re looking for someplace very patriotic, come to our Headquarters and Museum. If you’re looking for someplace serene, come to our beautiful park-like grounds. If you’re looking for someplace cool and breezy, come to our Hudson River location. If you’re looking for someplace scenic, come see a view of the Hudson Highlands. Washington’s Headquarters is ALL THAT AND MORE! Come to Washington’s Headquarters for the 4th of July!

Since no birthday would be complete without a present, you will be able to make one for yourself. In the Museum, you will be able to dip your own candle. It’s a take-home craft for all family members and a remembrance of a special birthday in an equally special location. Use it to top a cake – a birthday cake, if you like.

Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site is a registered national historic landmark. It is located at the corner of Liberty and Washington Streets within the city of Newburgh’s East End Historic District. The site is one of 35 historic sites within the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and is one of 28 facilities administered by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in New York and New Jersey.
