SUNY Sullivan to kick off anniversary celebration

SUNY Sullivan will host a special 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Reception in Loch Sheldrake on Saturday, May 18, 2013 to mark the beginning of a year-long celebration.

LOCH SHELDRAKE - SUNY Sullivan will mark the beginning of its year-long golden anniversary celebration with a very special 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Reception on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Events for the day will center on the college’s 49th annual commencement ceremony and the inauguration of college president, Dr. Karin Hilgersom.

The day will begin with the Nurses’ Pinning ceremony at 8:45 a.m., recognizing this year’s graduates from the nursing program. The ceremony is open to the public and will take place inside the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse.

In a private ceremony at 10:30 a.m. in the Seelig Theater, Dr. Karin M. Hilgersom will be installed as the college’s sixth president by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. Addresses will also be made by state and local legislators, SUNY Sullivan Board of Trustees and Foundation members, faculty, and administration.

The college’s 49th annual commencement ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. Held in the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse, this is a public event. This year’s commencement speaker is Patrick Dollard, CEO of the Center for Discovery in Harris, New York, who will also be receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the ceremony. Mr. Dollard’s nomination was made by former SUNY Sullivan Interim President, Dr. William Murabito, who has called Mr. Dollard "a trailblazer in his work for people with autism, bringing the best and the brightest researchers and scholars from top universities to Sullivan County."

Commencement will be followed at 3:00 p.m. by the 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Reception – a gathering for graduates, alumni, faculty, administration, and staff of SUNY Sullivan in the Kaplan Student Union and Benmosche Dining Room. The reception will be the official launch of the college’s year-long 50th Anniversary Celebration. Events planned for the coming year include the Annual Gala, the 2014 NJCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament, noted speakers and presentations, receptions, and more. Students, alumni, and the community at large will be invited to join together for these extraordinary events commemorating the institution’s 50 years.
