Habitat set to hold its annual Walk for Housing

NEWBURGH - Habitat Newburgh seeks individual and walker team participation for its Annual Walk for Housing. On Sunday, April 28, 2013, join members of the community to help Habitat Newburgh raise critical funds and awareness for simple, decent, and affordable housing for local, hard-working families in need. Walden Savings Bank is the proud "Neighborhood by Neighborhood" sponsor for this year’s Walk.

Registration begins at 1:00 pm and the walk begins at 2:00 pm. The walk route passes several Habitat homes, allowing participants to view completed and in-progress projects. Festivities, beginning at 1:00 pm, will feature live music, a raffle, and many family-friendly activities.

The day will culminate with the dedication of Phase III of the East Parmenter Street Neighborhood Development. Known as Faith Builds, these five single attached homes are being sponsored by local faith communities, including a full house sponsorship by Moulton Memorial Baptist Church in honor of Fred and Betsy Jadrosich. The development has replaced buildings boarded up for over 20 years. Complete with pocket parks, a pedestrian-friendly design, and Energy Star rated homes, this neighborhood development, when finished, will be home to 25 Habitat homeowners.

The City of Newburgh has been designated as the most distressed urban area in New York State. Newburgh’s shortage of livable housing has created worst-case scenarios for thousands of hard-working families. There are over 1,800 families in the City of Newburgh eligible to apply for a Habitat home. Given this reality, Habitat Newburgh has recognized the need to build faster and is committed to building another 50 homes in the next five years.
