NEWBURGH - Students from Barbara Lisi and Emilia Suarez-Riggs classes, along with Josephine Giglia-Byrne’s ESL students, eagerly joined the Great Mail Race. The three teachers collaborated on this project once Lisi got the first Great Mail Race Letter.
The Great American Mail Race is a project in which students "race" to get letters across the country to as many different states as possible before the end of the school year. The students write to a school in each state. This ongoing activity reinforces letter writing skills, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, as well as map skills in a fun and interesting way.
Students used a map and the website to choose two states/schools that they would like to contact for the project. Together as a class, the students and their teachers brainstormed about Newburgh and New Windsor’s economy, natural resources, and recreational opportunities. As a group, they decided which of these topics to "showcase" to the classes they contacted. In addition, the students wrote about themselves and their school.
The students are eagerly awaiting the arrival of letters back from other students across the country.
