NEWBURGH - In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Habitat Newburgh dedicated its House of Service at 30 E. Parmenter Street. This very special project, located in the heart of Habitat’s East Parmenter Street Neighborhood development, is being transformed by volunteers into dorm-style housing where AmeriCorps NCCC teams and week-long volunteer groups can stay while they help build. The House of Service will allow Habitat Newburgh to host more AmeriCorps teams and volunteers, helping Habitat Newburgh keep pace with its goal of building 50 houses in five years.
Those present at the dedication toured the "in-progress" house, which illustrates the work that volunteers do with Habitat Newburgh. The house features materials from the ReStore such as appliances, kitchen cabinets, a bathtub, paint, and other hardware, all of which are items available to the general public for purchase. Also on display were creative projects by Habitat staff and volunteers - murals, artwork, handmade shelving and cubbies, coat racks, and brightly colored walls - creating a home-away-from-home for the volunteers who will be staying there.
"Volunteering is at the heart of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh," explained Executive Director, Cathy Collins. "We couldn’t do what we do without the support of individuals like the ones who helped refurbish this house and groups like the ones that will use this House of Service. Today, we celebrate the love that comes for all the service that is provided by our volunteers and supporters."
