Maloney Urges Congress to Come Together

WEST POINT – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney visited with officials from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to discuss current priorities and the impending damage of sequestration on West Point. Rep. Maloney renewed his call for Congress to take swift action on a balanced plan to stop the devastating spending cuts that threaten local jobs and the Hudson Valley’s economy.

“Hardworking folks like those at West Point shouldn’t be victims of arbitrary cuts manufactured by the last Congress. Thousands of jobs are at stake in the Hudson Valley and our economy just can’t afford another self-inflicted setback,” said Maloney. “We can solve this problem with a fair, balanced plan to avert damaging cuts, control spending, and grow the economy – just like we did in the Clinton administration.”

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is targeted for $92 million in cuts, which is the largest Army budget cut throughout all of New York. Throughout the state, the sequester could cause approximately 12,000 civilian Department of Defense employees to be furloughed including the 1,300 employees at West Point and 406 at the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing at Stewart Air National Guard Base. A new report released by the White House demonstrates some of the devastating and widespread impact to local communities here in New York.
