NEWBURGH - Temple Hill students in Melissa Higgins, Josephine Giglia-Byrne, and Carolyn Rinaldi’s co-taught 4th grade class used various sources to research the life and historical impact Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has had and continues to have on the world.
The students started by researching Dr. King’s life using biographies, novels, articles, speeches, and documentaries. Following the model of the Common Core Standards, the students had discussions in small groups about the research they pursued and interpreted information presented in different modalities. The students were also able to integrate information from different texts on the same topic. Students also did a close reading of the speech, "I Have a Dream" by Dr. King. This was followed by the students viewing a documentary of Dr. King delivering his famous speech.
This research culminated with the students writing an informative essay about the life, dreams, and historical impact Dr. King had on the world. Students presented their research in front of their peers, teachers and administration.
