The New York Yankees and New York Blood Center (NYBC) have reached a record 500,000 blood donations as part of The New York Yankees High School Blood Donor Championship. Fifteen regional high schools were presented with Championship banners on the playing field Monday, June 8th, for their 2008-09 achievements in volunteer blood donation.
Howard P. Milstein, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for New York Blood Center, also presented the New York Yankees with a special award preceding their scheduled home game against the Tampa Devil Rays.
The New York Yankees High School Blood Donor Championship, first launched in 1996, has been a home run for New York and New Jersey students who have helped save hundreds of thousands of lives. Volunteer blood donations from high school students have yielded more than 65,000 pints this year. New York Blood Center thanks its high school lifesavers, the New York Yankees for their outstanding teamwork, and every blood donor for his and her gifts of life to patients in more than 200 New York and New Jersey hospitals.
