Children’s mental health initiative

Dr. Barry Shrem

Newburgh - Outpatient mental health services for children, adolescents and families are now available in our community, as the result of a St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital–Mount Sinai initiative to bring this much-needed specialty to our region.

Barry Shrem, Ph.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, who practices on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, has opened the Hudson Valley Center for Development at the Cornwall Medical Pavilion at SLCH’s Cornwall campus. The Center will provide clinical psychotherapy and related developmental services.

"Children and adolescents struggling with mental health issues need very specialized care, and parents attempting to meet the needs of their children also need sophisticated types of support," said Dr. Shrem. "Together with SLCH, we identified a very real need in the mid-Hudson region for outpatient mental health services for this vulnerable group, and we’re delighted to be part of this important initiative."

Dr. Shrem is a licensed clinical psychologist with broad experience in clinical psychotherapy and psychodiagnostic assessment with adults and children. In addition to his Mount Sinai affiliation, Dr. Shrem has served on the faculties of the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons (adult psychiatry) and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (pediatrics). He is a resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Dr. Shrem’s primary area of focus is the treatment via clinical psychotherapy of emotional and behavioral disorders in children, adolescents and adults - including anxiety and mood disorders and some severe psychopathology - and clinical psychotherapy with neurodevelopmental disorders in children, including ADHD, Asperger’s and high-functioning autism.

Also seeing patients in Cornwall will be Michael Shrem, Psy.D. The Hudson Valley Center for Development is located at the Cornwall Medical Pavilion, 21 Laurel Avenue, Cornwall. For an appointment, call 458-4557.
