West Point - The West Point Band’s newest chamber music group, the Gray Line Clarinet Quartet will present a recital of music from the last thousand years. The program is an eclectic mix of repertoire, both old and new. The concert will feature the music of Arvo Pärt, Josquin des Prez, John Cage and others. The performance is free and open to the public on Sunday, January 31
st at 3:00 p.m. in the West Point Jewish Chapel.
This inaugural performance by the Gray Line Clarinet Quartet will endeavor to present the clarinet quartet as a diverse and engaging chamber music ensemble. The performance will take full advantage of the Jewish Chapel’s spacious acoustics during John Cage’s
Antiphonies, originally for voices. The quartet members will be placed around the Jewish Chapel for this hauntingly beautiful work.
The quartet will also perform
Mardale Changes by English Composer Nicholas Simpson. The piece is about the damming of the Mardale Valley in the English Lake District. The valley was once a bustling community that now sits submerged under a reservoir. The piece closes with the final hymn sung in the Mardale church before it was demolished, Hills of the North Rejoice.
