July 4th, 2008 Happy July 4th
Inside the "tower of victory" at Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh. |

As the nation collectively reaches back and recognizes those courageous men and women who, 232 years ago, put everything on the line to guarantee our independence, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission welcomes the public to their 21 parks and 8 historic sites for their own 4th of July celebrations.
The pools are open, the trails are humming with hikers, and at George Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh “where the Tower of Victory celebrates the peace that marked the end of the Revolutionary War - and stands as the nation's oldest monument to peace - they will be playing baseball, 19th Century style. And, while the stock market may have officially entered bear territory yesterday, they're bullish on the future of the parks, and recognize the essential role they've played when times have been tough. We rallied around each other when the parks were built generations ago, and we see signs aplenty of volunteers recognizing that they are needed again. In so doing, together we're discovering hidden skills, strengths, and smiles. The commission is thankful to those people who have given their time and talents, and we look forward to further renewals and revivals.
They've got over 110,000 acres out there to enjoy. Have a great time, pick up after yourself, remember your sunscreen, and take a moment to respect George, John, Thomas, Benjamin, Abraham, and the millions of others who make this nation great. |
