NYSPHSAA Cheerleading Committee Discuss Competitive and Traditional Cheer as a Sport
LATHAM - The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) recently conducted a Cheerleading Committee meeting at the NYSPHSAA Office to discuss and evaluate all aspects of the sport. Recently, the New York State Board of Regents approved cheerleading as a sport and NYSPHSAA discussed various areas of the sport at its May 2nd Executive Committee meeting.
NYSPHSAA called its Cheerleading Committee meeting to order at 10 am with 29 individuals present including committee members from each of 11 Sections, NYSPHSAA staff, Section Executive Directors, and guests including NYSED Associate of Physical Education, Darryl Daily, and NYSED Assistant Director of Teaching Initiatives, Anne Jasinski. Numerous topics were discussed at length and proposals were developed to bring forward for action at the NYSPHSAA Central Committee meeting July 29-31 in Lake Placid.
The committee also voted to continue to host regional invitational events during the 2014-2015 school year and consider a State Championship event to be held during the 2015-2016 school.
The future of the State Championship event will be determined in the Fall of 2014.
