Newburgh Rowing Club helps the community

Newburgh Rowing Club rowers ferry passengers across the water during the annual Downing Park Gala, held in the City of Newburgh on Saturday, July 20, 2013.

NEWBURGH - Newburgh Rowing Club Programs Director Coach Ed Kennedy and his rowers have been putting their rowing skills to use to support the Newburgh community.

On Sunday, July 14, 2013, about 20 competitive rowers and Coach Kennedy got in their kayaks at 6:00 a.m., paddled up to the site of the Orange County Triathalon 2013, and then kayaked alongside the triathlete swimmers for safety and support. After that, Coach Kennedy and the competitive rowers joined up with more rowers and families to host a Water Station at the corner of Marine Drive and Grand Street for the Triathletes.

"We were very happy to support the Orange County Triathletes, both in the water and on land," said Coach Kennedy. "As an athletic club and community organization, based in the City of Newburgh, we will always provide water support where we can. We kayaked and hosted the Water Station for last year’s triathalon, and we have kayaked in support of several events where swimmers swim across the Hudson River, such as the Great Hudson River Swim to support the Beacon Pool."

The Newburgh Rowing Club, lead by Coaches Eric Stewart and Lisa Kristofek, took their wooden hulled gig boat, which seats several passengers, and some double kayaks to Downing Park on Saturday, July 20th, to ferry passengers around the Polly during the Downing Park Annual Gala. "It was a great family event," said NRC Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo. "My husband and I attended the gala as guests, to support the wonderful work of the Downing Park Committee, and our kids rowed passengers in the gig boat. This is the 4th year that Coach Kennedy has been bringing rowers to the Downing Park Gala Event." The NRC also ferried passengers around the Polly at Downing Park during Newburgh Illuminated and the Family Day in the Park on July 13th, hosted by the local chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.

"We love coming out here and supporting the community," said Kelvin Vidalis, a rower with the NRC through the Student Ambassador Program. "My younger brother, Anthony, is a rower too, and our family lives a couple of blocks from the Park. Wherever Coach tells us to go, that’s where we go."
