NEWBURGH - On Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2013, more than a dozen rowers from the NFA Varsity Crew Team and Newburgh Rowing hosted the "Crew Team’s First Annual Super Bowl of Giving" at Shop Rite in Newburgh, collecting about $450.00 in food donations, gift cards and monetary donations for the Newburgh Salvation Army Food Pantry.
"The Crew Team wanted to give back to the community that came out and supported us," said Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo. "Our kids stood outside Shop Rite for two hours and collected donations for those less fortunate. While everyone is was out shopping for their Super Bowl parties, they were also very generous to those in need today. It is the least we can do to show our appreciation to the people of Newburgh." The NFA Varsity Crew Team is the only 100% community funded varsity team at NFA.
"We would like to thank Shop Rite in Newburgh for allowing us to host this event," said Coach Ed Kennedy, Head Coach of the NFA Varsity Crew Team. "Shop Rite has been a very good neighbor."
"The Newburgh Salvation Army really appreciates what the young people of the Crew Team have done for us," said Lt. Sheila Gage, Pastor at the Newburgh Salvation Army, "this is really going to make a difference."
"It feels good to be able to give back to the community," said Frankie Maurice, a senior at NFA who is a member of the NFA Varsity Crew Team and a member of the NFA Varsity Boys Swim Team. "We also hope to show our gratitude to the community by bringing back some medals this crew season."
