MYSTIC, CT – The Newburgh Rowing Club traveled to the 21st Annual Coastweeks Regatta in Mystic, CT, for the start of the head race season, and came home with a record-shattering 9 medals - 2 Silver and 7 Bronze. “I could not be more proud of these rowers,” said NRC Programs Director Coach Ed Kennedy. “They have been coming down for morning practices at 5:30 a.m., going to school, then coming back down to the Boathouse to practice. And it definitely paid off.”
Over 200 boats, from singles to fours, competed at Coastweeks. The competition consisted of the likes of the US Coast Guard Academy and the US Merchant Marine Academy, along with other youth rowing clubs. The 2,000 meter course follows along the Mystic River.
Some of the NRC rowers had just graduated from the Novice or “Learn to Row” program, to the Competitive program, and were competing for the first time. “The point of this program is to teach kids from all schools, and our scholarship students, to row, then get them competitive,” said Coach Kennedy. Luke Sendelbach, from Beacon High School just started rowing in the spring. He competed in the Men’s Open Singles and won the Bronze.
The best time by far was the Mixed 4+ coxed by Christian LoBiondo, with a time of 8:38:23. This powerhouse crew, consisting of Olivia Mennillo, Steven Hetman, Kyle Britton, and Meg Ryan with LoBiondo at coxyn, missed 1st place by only 9 seconds, with the Unaffiliated 1st place boat finishing with a time of 8:29:23. “I am just so happy for my boat, they all worked so hard. My other boat, the Men’s 4+ with Vic Santiago, Kyle Britton, Marley Brackett and Matt Beisswenger was coming down to morning practice and also worked very hard but we were up against some really good crews.”
Taking 3rd in the Men’s Youth 2x was Nick Illenberger and Matthew Weresbe at 8:46:46.
Said Coach Kennedy, “you can let the other teams know - Newburgh is back.”
