Poughkeepsie - Hudson River Housing, Inc., and Westhab, Inc., recently received a total of $50,000 in grant awards as the winners of the TD Charitable Foundation's "Housing for Everyone" competition, which supports affordable housing initiatives in the community.
Now in its third year, the "Housing for Everyone" competition offers local affordable housing non-profit organizations from Maine to Florida an opportunity to win funding for qualified housing projects in the communities where TD Bank (formerly known as Commerce Bank) and TD Banknorth do business.
“Access to cost-appropriate housing in the Hudson Valley area has always been a challenge for low-to-moderate income households, and in today’s economic environment this has become a very critical issue,” said Gail Webster, executive director at Hudson River Housing, Inc. “Thanks to TD Bank’s support, organizations like Hudson River Housing can help further our mission of helping people find a place to live.”
Poughkeepsie-based Hudson River Housing Inc., will use the $25,000 grant award to help fund its housing program, an initiative in which Hudson River Housing partners with Dutchess County municipalities to operate and manage affordable housing programs, which includes the development and administration of zoning ordinances designed to create affordable workforce housing for low and moderate-income individuals who work in the community.
Elmsford-based Westhab Inc. will use the $25,000 grant to help fund housing development initiatives related to almost 500 housing units in twelve projects in the Bronx, Westchester and Connecticut . The grant will also help fund Westhab’s Nodine Hill Community Resource Center in Yonkers . The Center provides free information and referral and on-site services, including housing and employment assistance, family and domestic violence counseling, nutrition and cooking classes, to neighborhood residents.
Through the "Housing for Everyone" program, the TD Charitable Foundation donated a total $1.5 million in 2008, and has invested nearly $5 million in affordable housing to date.
