WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Eliot Engel and Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles E. Schumer hailed Senate passage of legislation they championed to rename the New City Post Office building at 245 North Main St. for the late State Assembly Member Kenneth Zebrowski Sr. Congressman Engel introduced the legislation in the House of Representatives, where it passed unanimously last week. It now goes to the President to be signed into law.
Rep. Engel said, “Ken Zebrowski was a good friend and a great representative for his district. He was a true leader not only for Rockland County but for the State of New York. He has been sorely missed by the people he served, and especially by his family. Now the residents of Clarkstown will be able to honor him every day at the Post Office and remember his decades of service.”
“This is a fitting tribute to a wonderful public servant taken from us too soon,” Senator Clinton said. “Ken Zebrowski was a tireless advocate for the people of Rockland County and a leader who contributed so much to New York. I am pleased to join my colleagues in honoring Ken’s long service to the community.”
“Ken Zebrowski was a determined and committed public servant who worked vigorously to represent the people of Rockland and New York State,” Senator Schumer said. “Ken was committed to improving some very critical issues facing New Yorkers today including education, health care, and the environment. We will never forget his dedication to New York State and hope that by renaming the New City Post Office in his honor we are memorializing one of Rockland County’s greatest advocates.”
“I am pleased that the contributions of Ken Zebrowski to our community and the state will be recognized by the dedication of the New City Post Office in his memory,” said Congresswoman Nita Lowey (NY-18). “Ken Zebrowski served Rockland County and the state with integrity and distinction, and I look forward to President Bush signing this legislation into law.”
“My family and I would like to thank all our congressional representatives and Senators, especially Congressman Engel who lead the charge for this distinct honor. The post office is a central location of every community and my father loved to spend time there not just doing business but socializing with residents, staff and visitors. I know he would be both proud and humbled to have this distinguished community building bear his name,” said Zebrowski’s son, the current State Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski.
The legislation renames the New City Post Office building as the Kenneth Peter Zebrowski Post Office Building, in recognition of Representative Zebrowski’s many legislative accomplishments and his dedication to the community.
Mr. Zebrowski was first elected to the Rockland County Legislature at the age of 27, beginning three decades of public service. He served as Chair of the Rockland County Legislature for four terms and was elected to the NY State Assembly in 2005 representing the 94th District. At his death, Mr. Zebrowski had 102 bills pending before that body on a variety of issues, including stronger public schools, greater environmental protections, and improved access to health care.”
Sheldon Silver, the Speaker of the Assembly, called him “a man of leadership and integrity, wisdom and wit, and generosity of spirit.”
Rep. John Hall and the rest of the New York delegation joined in with their support of Rep. Engel’s bill in the House. Senators Clinton and Schumer championed the legislation in the Senate. Last month, the senators urged the Homeland Security subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information to support the bill.
