POUGHKEEPSIE—The Poughkeepsie Rotary Club held a special fundraising drive among its members recently to raise funds for the Walkway Over the Hudson effort to transform the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge into the world’s longest elevated pedestrian park.
Rotary Club President Scott Sweeney on Tuesday (May 6) presented Walkway Chairman Fred Schaeffer with a check for $500 to help pay for the project, which is expected to break ground later this month. "It will be a historic day in the City of Poughkeepsie and the Hudson Valley when the Walkway is complete. The Poughkeepsie Rotary Club is proud to support Walkway over the Hudson ," said Sweeney.
Schaeffer thanked Sweeney and the Poughkeepsie Rotary Club for their contribution to Walkway Over the Hudson. “We are particularly grateful for this contribution from the Poughkeepsie Rotary Club because it represents an expression of support from a respected public service organization within our community. We will put the money to good use,” said Schaeffer. “We still need to raise funds to complete this project in time for the state’s Quadricentennial Celebration in 2009, so we appreciate every contribution.”
The Poughkeepsie Club is the oldest Rotary Club in the immediate area, having been founded in 1919. The Club holds weekly breakfast meetings at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. It participates in local, national and international service projects, such as college scholarships, teacher awards, pure drinking water for remote areas of Central America and the worldwide elimination of polio.
